Platform for Intercultural Europe Print

The Platform for Intercultural Europe is a network that connects the work of grass-roots practitioners, associations, public bodies and European institutions, forming strong links from practice to policy and back again. In this way we aim to strengthen the work of and support for all those who work towards intercultural dialogue in Europe.

The Platform is a civil society initiative developed as a response to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue in 2008. It is supported by the European Cultural Foundation and Culture Action Europe, and financed by the Network of European Foundations and the European Union through the EU Culture Programme.

The Platform is a democratic association whose membership is open to any organisation or individuals that support our vision and constitution. From our roots in the arts and culture we also welcome partners concerned with intercultural action in the context of youth and social affairs, education and learning, human rights, anti-racism and minority rights.

Vision

Our vision is of an equitable European community that values its diverse people, seeks positive dialogue with others and enables each person to make their distinctive contribution to a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

Mission

Our mission is to be a legitimate and effective interlocutor between European institutions and civil society organisations committed to the values of intercultural dialogue.

We do this by:

•    Developing understanding of the concepts and intercultural dialogue and action;
•    Representing the experience, insight and needs of all those who act to promote it;
•    Influencing European and national policy to improve support for the work of practitioners in the field and to make all relevant public policies take due account of cultural diversity;
•    Providing a space for reflection, dialogue and learning in our field.

Objectives

Our goals in 2009 and 2010 are to:

•    Hold four Practice Exchanges on intercultural action in different countries;
•    Facilitate two European Fora to work on policy priorities;
•    Participate in key European meetings including the Brussels Culture Forum in 2009;
•    Promote knowledge of and support for the Rainbow Paper on Intercultural Dialogue;
•    Identify short and mid-term priorities in partnership with our stakeholders;
•    Communicate our work through the website and policy publications;
•    Establish and extend the Platform’s formal membership;
•    Develop strong relationships with European Union institutions and other partners; and
•    Review and learn from our work to plan future development.
