Introduction

The Roberto Cimetta Fund is an international platform supporting artistic mobility and creativity in Europe and the Mediterranean, which was launched in 1999 by cultural professionals (IETM – International network for Contemporary performing arts, ONDA – French national Office for Artistic Distribution, and Inteatro Centre of Polverigi in Italy), who were eager to provide capacity building for emerging artists in and around the Mediterranean. The Fund has set up and implemented a mobility programme that provides grants for artists and cultural operators who develop projects in an international perspective. These projects help consolidate the arts sector and develop creativity at local level, both in Europe and in South and East Mediterranean countries. The aim of the Fund is to respond rapidly and directly to the needs of artists and cultural managers who are actively engaged in the development of contemporary arts.

Structure

The chairman of the Fund is Ferdinand Richard. He is the Founding-Director of AMI, Innovative Music Centre and the Friche de la Belle-de-Mai, both based in Marseilles. He was also Chairman of Culture Action Europe (EFAH) in Brussels from 1996 to 1999, and is an expert advisor and lecturer on culture in various private and public institutions and organisations (French Cultural Policy Observatory, UNESCO Fund for Cultural Diversity, Agenda 21 for Culture, Senghor University Alexandria...). Velia Papa, the Director of Inteatro Polverigi, Italy is the current treasurer of the Fund.

Other members of the Board are:
- Esra Aysun, Co-Director of cˇu’m„a*, a contemporary arts organisation in Istanbul, Turkey
- Serene Huleileh, Director of the Arab Education Forum in Amman, Jordan
- Eduardo Miralles Ventimillia, Chairman of Interarts, Spain
- Antonio Pinto Ribeiro, Consultant, Fundaçao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, Portugal
- Nawel Skandrani, Choreographer and Director of Studio Bambou, Tunis, Tunisia
- Emina Visnic, Director of the Independent Centre for Culture and Youth in Zagreb, Croatia

In order to select the artists and operators who have requested travel grants, the Board assigns experienced arts professionals with the role of expert on the selection committee.
The experts are: Jumana Al-Yasiri, Director of Abwab for the arts and culture, Syria; Zeina Arida, Arab Image Foundation (Photo), Lebanon; Valérie Baran, Le Tarmac (performing arts, new writing), Paris, France; Toni Cots, l’Animal a l’Esquena, Girona, Spain (performing arts); Radhouane El Meddeb, choreographer, dancer, Tunisia/France; Matéo Feijo, La Laboral, Gijon, Spain (performing arts); Vlasta Gracin, City Office for Education, Culture and Sport, Zagreb, Croatia (visual arts); Cristina Grande, Serralves Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal (dance).

Secretary General
Angie Cotte, has experience in cultural networking at European level. She has contributed to the organisation of many conferences and debates in Europe on cultural policy and has coordinated arts and culture projects.

Aims

•   Reduce the isolation of artists and operators by making mobility possible in the South and East Med
•   Encourage meetings between artists to further collaborations and build up artistic teams in the South and East Med
•   Enable artists to take part in residencies and training programmes that they would not otherwise be able to go to
•   Establish partnerships with local and regional authorities to favour a new form of intercultural governance
•   Establish partnerships with foundations and institutions who provide financial support to artistic mobility
•   Take part in Civil society platforms to integrate contemporary arts and cultural projects in advocacy at EuroMed level
•   Establish partnerships with operators in the region

Activities

The Cimetta Fund runs an easily accessible mobility grants programme. Focus is given to projects and operators that consolidate the arts sector in South or East Mediterranean regions. Artists and operators from all over Europe and the Mediterranean can apply by simply downloading and filling in a form from our website. Applications are examined on a regular basis throughout the year. The Fund provides grants on an individual basis and does not co-fund projects or organisations. Certain mobility directions (south>south or east<>south), destinations or departure zones are prioritized depending on the mobility funders.

The Fund also focuses on how to engage at the political level with decision makers in the region in order to improve awareness of the arts and culture sector and advocate for improvement. There is a need to bridge the gap between the professional artistic field and the public local, regional and national authorities.

The Fund is also engaged in projects with operators in the region to leverage on each other’s strengths. Currently we are the main partner of a scheme called “Istikshaf: exploring mobility”, set up by the Arab Education Forum (Jordan) in the framework of a partnership programme funded by the Anna Lindh Foundation. The project is a practical response to the necessity of promoting joint projects, collaboration and action between mobility funders and operators working in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The partners of the scheme are all organisations engaged in the support to mobility as a tool for the development of creativity and innovation in the Mediterranean region. They are The Arab Theatre Training Center (Lebanon), The Al Balad Theatre (Jordan), the Studio Emadeddine (Egypt) and the Dramtiska Institutet (Sweden).
