UNITER - Union of Theatre People of Romania Print

Introduction

Faced with an accomplished historical event - the Romanian Revolution – theatre professionals in Romania reacted promptly and, in February 1990, founded UNITER as a means to safeguard their identity, their future as well as their creative potential.

UNITER enjoyed considerable success in forming ties between Romanian, European and world-wide theatre, in promoting indigenous theatrical values; it was equally successful in narrowing the distance with European structures, the Council of Europe, the European Community and UNESCO; it also reached beyond Europe, building a reputation for Romanian theatre all over the world.

Structure

UNITER is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, established in February 1990. It is an autonomous professional body fresh.

The General Assembly is the governing body of the Association and meets at least once in four years, presided over by the President, the Vice-president and the Executive Director.

The Association is administered by a Senate composed of 19 members. Senators shall be elected by the General Assembly from among the members of the Association.

UNITER is the organisation of Romanian theatre professionals - actors, stage directors, stage designers, drama critics, playwrights; the organisation presently counts nine hundred professionals. UNITER has around 900 members representing all theatre professions.

Aims

UNITER is aimed at stimulating creativity and at promoting exchange programmes between theatres in Romania and abroad.

The principles on which the organiation have relied since its inception are freedom of expression, creation and association; the right to autonomy; the right to voice individual contributions to the realm of national and international culture; an uninhibited opening toward world culture; all of these, driven, beyond doubt, by the mutual interests of the theatre community.

Naturally, the development of the professional Romanian Theatre Union was forced to take into account many of the social and political shortcuts caused by the country's transition as they emerged, although the organisation as such had no trade union structure and this type of activities were not particularly envisaged; neither was a clearly defined social dimension.

UNITER 's short as well as long-term aim is to seek novel means of expression, to keep up the pace with contemporary artistic developments, to enhance established professional ties and to find the appropriate manner whereby to tackle present social and economic circumstances, promoting surprise projects and programmes within the realm of contemporary Romanian theatre.

Activities

  • UNITER runs programmes and projects involving specialists from every theatre domain; it is actively seeking to implement a national strategy with regard to the theatre and to give new impetus to the relationship between Theatre and Society by reviewing it in a novel and thorough manner
  • UNITER programmes and projects are aimed at developing the following types of activities: creation, theatre productions, post-graduate professional training, socio-cultural, humanitarian
  • UNITER holds and circulates specific data, thereby defining itself as a major resource for specialised information; a dynamic and varied strategy turn the organisation into a national centre representative of the Romanian theatre; UNITER publishes INFO UNITER, a monthly information bulletin
  • UNITER co-ordinates UNITEXT, a publishing house specialised in books and magazines focusing on the theatre; the publishing house has a programme of its own, aimed at stimulating original Romanian drama and at reflecting Romanian as well as international theatre-related events; the director of the publishing house is drama critic Marian Popescu
  • UNITER comprises UNISTAR, an economic branch which acts as an agent and a producer for theatrical productions, an agent in the field of advertising, bids, management, marketing, consulting, copyrights, services, a.s.o.
