IntroductionIG Kultur Österreich is the network and advocacy organisation for those engaged in independent and autonomous cultural work in Austria. StructureThe structure of IG Kultur Österreich consists of an executive board (elected biennially by the general assembly) as well as of a regional board (Laendervertretung) for advisory purposes. IG Kultur Oesterreich is a membership organisation representing about 350 members (July 2004). The members of IG Kultur Österreich are cultural organisations, which work independently in the field of contemporary art, music, dance, film etc. AimsIG Kultur Österreich strives to achieve improvements in federal and regional (on the level of the provinces / Bundeslaender) legislation and regulations necessary to ensure structural security for cultural initiatives and social security for those engaged in cultural work. With a specific focus on transparency on decision making processes. ActivitiesIn addition to mediating between cultural initiatives and the public authorities responsible for culture, IG Kultur Österreich engages in lobbying for improvements concerning the security and an increase of public financing. Writing and publishing catalogues of demands, and recommendations for nominations in advisory councils, and acting as consultant in cultural planning processes – all these activities on the part of IG Kultur Österreich serve the further goal of ensuring the medium and long term development of independent cultural work. A general emphasis on interlinking specific political issues such as antiracism to independent cultural work in Austria. Publication of a quarterly journal on critical cultural politics (Kulturrisse).
