Introduction to the organisation


Asociacija is a non-governmental non-profit association of NGOs, freelance artists and cultural workers based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Its objective is to advocate for the improvement of working conditions and systemic position of the NGOs and individual professionals active in the field of arts and culture within the national cultural policies. Our main goal is to advocate for the interests of cultural NGOs in Slovenia and their access to public funding.

Structure


Asociacija is an interest group that functions on the principles of democracy and solidarity. Our common aim is to improve the position of contemporary art and urban cultural practices. Asociacija is legally established as an association, it works as a network of NGOs in the field of arts and culture and has recently been professionalized, that means we have 2 regular employees (project manager and assistant). The network currently has 60 members (47 NGOs in the field arts and culture as well as 13 freelance artists and cultural workers). The association is represented by the president (Jurij Krpan), vice-president (Katja Praznik), and 11 members of the board who are responsible for a specific field (Jadranka Ljubičić, Katerina Mirović (visual arts), Goran Bogdanovski, Tamara Bračič Vidmar (performing arts), Janez Janša (intermedia arts), Igro Vidmar (music), Janez Janša (publishing), Dušan Dovč, Marko Brumen (supporting systems for arts and culture), Irena Pivka, Ema Kugler (freelance artist and cultural workers) – all of them are elected from among our membership organizations. The board holds regular meetings at least every 2 months and the general assembly is organized at least 3 times per year.

Aims


Asociacija’s objective is to contribute to the improvement of working conditions for the NGOs and individual professionals active in the field of art and culture as well as to transparent participation of civil society in the development of professional and social standards for the cultural sector. Furthermore our aims are:
-    to participate in the development of cultural policies,
-    to influence regulations and public calls in the field of culture,
-    to improve working conditions at a systemic level
-    to improve the social security and system position of cultural and artistic NGOs

Activities


Our main activities are connected to the improvement of internal communications of the NGOs in the arts and culture sector, formalization of communication with representatives of public authorities and the establishment of structured dialogue processes, distribution of important information about cultural policies, networking and promotion of the field of arts and culture.
  • Information
    - management of the network mailing list, the newsletter and public communication about the project
    - upgrading the existing website and developing an informational portal for the network members and other NGOs in the field of culture
  • National networking
    - presentations of the network in different Slovenian cities in order to attract new members,
  • Promotion of the field of art and culture

    - public debates with relevant stakeholders (Investing in culture, Culture and media space)
  • Education for NGOs

    - public workshops: Cultural production and legislation, Cultural NGOs as employers
  • Training for members of NGOs
    - advocacy workshops and training
  • Strengthening of civil dialogue
    - promotion of establishing project groups for different cultural issues and working groups for the field of cultural policies in order to structure the dialogue with public authorities on national and local levels
    - a lawyer specialized in legislation in the field of culture is participating in the preparation of working documents
    - research on the role and working conditions of cultural NGOs in Slovenia
