Introduction

The Danish organisation Swinging Europe has toured every year, since 1998, with the European Jazz Orchestra. In 2005 the world-wide network of jazz producers from national public radio stations – organised under the name of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) – joined the project. Each year, the EBU jazz producers select a new conductor, new composers and a new line-up of musicians who then meet for a three-week concert tour.

Structure

During the first six years of existence of the project, all EU member countries as well as the International Association of Schools of Jazz had already been represented on the orchestra's Artistic Advisory Board. The board is responsible for the commission of new music and for the selection of musicians and composer-conductors. It cooperates with a number of international institutions including: UNESCO, the International Music Council (IMC), the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), the International Jazz Federation (IJF), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Nordjazz, music festivals, clubs, magazines, cultural institutions and foreign embassies.

Aims

The ‘Swinging Europe’ project aims to emphasize the diversity of the European jazz heritage and to give these traditions a new life, bringing together the most talented European composers to do so. The orchestra commissions new musicians each year for a concert performance within and outside the EU. The project also aims to create exchange opportunities within the frame of further education and career development, and thereby looks to contribute to social integration and mutual understanding within Europe, using music as a dynamic element of interest especially for young people.

Activities

In close cooperation with its partner organisation the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) – in particular the EBU Jazz Producers' Group –, Swinging Europe undertakes a three-week tour with the European Jazz Orchestra every year – the largest international big band jazz project of its kind. Each year it brings together a new conductor and a new line-up of musicians, aged 18-30. As part of the event, a smaller orchestra called the Trainee Band is also constituted; giving talented youngsters from music schools the opportunity to follow professional musicians during the rehearsals. The Trainee Band’s workshop also includes a music programme, and ends with a one-week tour.
