Introduction

IAMIC is a world-wide network of organisations that document and promote the music of our time. IAMIC’s 43 member organisations in 38 countries (2006) provide essential services to composers, musicians, educators, students, and audiences of new music. The primary national resource centre for new music in many countries, they collect and preserve the scores of national/regional composers and make these works available to the public, and also contribute to regional cultural development through project and promotional work. While each member organisation focuses on the promotion of musical activities from their country or region, IAMIC works to promote international exchange on issues of common concern and brings these organisations together for collective projects.

Structure

Music Information Centre managers began their collaboration in 1959 as a committee within the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML). Since 1986, IAMIC has operated independently, as a non-profit membership organisation. The IAMIC Secretariat was established in Brussels in 2006 thanks to support from the Flemish Community of Belgium. The work of the Secretariat and IAMIC committees is overseen by a Board of Directors elected by the membership at the annual General Assembly to represent the geographic and economic diversity of the members and to advise on organisational development.

Aims

to provide an international context for IAMIC members, to play an active role in the broader international music environment
to encourage and enhance access to information, materials, and products provided by IAMIC members
to encourage the dissemination, performance, and broadcast of the music from IAMIC members
to function as an open forum for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and skills among IAMIC members
to encourage exchanges and collaborations between IAMIC members and to provide a range of relevant services to IAMIC members
to encourage and assist in the formation of new Music Information Centres
to develop programmes and activities that support the objectives of IAMIC

Activities

The annual IAMIC General Assembly and Conference is an international reunion of new music specialists and an educational event with seminars and discussions on all aspects of new music promotion, performance, policy, and politics. It is also a concert space featuring world and national premieres of works by living composers and a planning platform for IAMIC internal development.

Sounds of the Year, the complete list of works submitted by IAMIC members in this and previous years, serves as a reference for performers seeking to expand their new music repertoire and is available for download from the IAMIC website.

With the launch of a new website and e-newsletter in 2006, IAMIC seeks to support its membership by acting as a central resource for news about the projects and activities of Music Information Centres and Associate Organisations across the world. Likewise, the IAMIC e-newsletter is an important communication tool for international colleagues within the IAMIC network and the broader arts community.

IAMIC committees are active in a variety of research and development projects according to the priorities defined by the membership.
