ACCR – The European Network of Cultural Centres-Historic Monuments Print
logo_ACCR_web

Introduction

The Association des Centres Culturels de Rencontre (ACCR) was established in 1972, at the initiative of Jean Salusse, director at that moment of the Caisse Nationale des Monuments Historiques, with the support of this institution and of the public authorities. The primarily goal for these parties was to encourage the cooperation between established pioneers of the re-use of historic monuments in France (Royaumont, les Prémontrés) and new projects (the Chartreuse, Fontevraud, the Salt works of Arc-et-Senans). This cooperation was imagined on the grounds of several common aspects between those projects: a professional and passionate team, a contemporary artistic project and a monument. The artistic project is an original one, conceived in osmosis with the site, aiming to integrate the monument into the contemporary life and thus justifying its progressive rehabilitation. The project offers the opportunity to artists and researchers to blend the material, the symbolic charge and the memories of the site into their work.

The Association grew along with its members becoming a vital instrument of networking and the guarantee of best practice in the spirit of the Charter adopted in 1992 and countersigned by the Minister of Culture.

Structure

The European Network of Cultural Centres Historic Monuments was launched in 1991 in Dublin at the initiative of the 'Association des Centres Culturels de Rencontre. It gathers today 38 centres from 16 countries in Europe and Americas.

Objective

The objective of the network is to create and support cooperation at European level in the domain of the reuse of heritage through the involvement of artists and researchers. The network, base on the experience and the logistics of the Association des Centres Culturels de Rencontre, ensures the enlargement of the reflexion on diverse experiences (private monuments for instance). The network takes stock of these different approaches and praxis and develops a genuinely European knowledge in the field.

Activities

The association offers to its members a platform of discussion, common reflexion and work on all the issues identified as of common interest. It proposes a conceptual framework and technical assistance to the new projects of cultural reuse and links them to the members. It hosts a resource centre meant to promote the original concept of cultural and artistic reuse of the heritage. It developed also two multilingual databases available on line MOREUS - gathers examples of cultural reuse of monuments from all over the world and PROXIMA that presents the activities of the centres.

The ACCR manage in partnership with the ministry of Culture the policy of enlargement of the Association and the award of the label « CCR » to centres in France.
