Introduction

The AFO is the professional organisation of orchestras in France, created in 2000 on the initiative of the permanent orchestras with the support of the DMDTS – Ministry of Culture.

Acting as an observatory for the profession, the AFO organises the gathering and sharing of information relating to the activities of its member orchestras. As a resource centre, the AFO guides orchestras on common issues in all of their work: studies, publications, training courses. As a voice representing the profession, the AFO contributes to the definition of cultural policies and international cooperation: thematic meetings, demonstrations and the European network of orchestras.

Activities

The French Association of Orchestras publishes, trains and informs. AFO publications are the reflection of its activities and a communication tool which completes the services provided on the internet site. Thus, the three forums in 2001, 2003 and 2005 led to the publication of conference proceedings which constitute an exceptional information resource on the major issues in the orchestra world. Similarly, the “White Paper” on educational activities is today a reference work in terms of practical information and as an aid to further reflection.

In developing an ambitious programme of professional training, the AFO responds the specific needs of the profession, as expressed as much by the musicians as by administrative and technical personnel. The following subjects are therefore addresses in the training offered: the health of musicians, educational activities, interventions in the hospital sector, marketing, new technologies for use in public relations, sponsorship.

Sharing information and acting on the ground today imply working at the European level. The AFO is therefore a member of the two most important European organisations in the cultural sector (Pearle and Culture Action Europe), as well as an informal reflection group of French cultural organisations. It is also an initiator of the European Network of orchestras, established following the European Orchestras Forum of 2005.
