A clear centre-right victoryThe European elections, held simultaneously in 27 countries for the first time in history, ended in a clear victory for the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) and a defeat for the Party of European Socialists (PES). According to EUobserver, Europeans turned largely to the centre-right parties in reaction to the economic crisis and because Social Democrats were unable to persuade Europeans – under pressure from the economic crisis, unemployment and growing social problems – that they could provide the answers.
