Clubture Network Print

Introduction

Clubture is a non-profit participatory network that gathers independent cultural organizations from Croatia. It functions as collaborative platform within which those organisations are exchanging programs, i.e. cooperate directly on specific projects. Thanks to the great diversity and dynamics of activities, as well as to amount of programs, innovative cooperation and decision-making model, the network has become an important actor in cultural production in Croatia, primary considering relatively undiscovered fields such as urban culture, youth culture, interdisciplinary art and cultural projects, activist and socially engaged programs, etc. By interconnecting actors that are oriented towards their local communities, but also those that are in the same time turning to international cooperation; by developing capacity building programs and know-how accumulation; and by insisting on wide participation in cultural policies it gives remarkable contribution to cultural democracy and it is an important factor in total cultural development in Croatia.

The network was founded in 2002 and during five years of continuous activities it gathered and connected more than 80 organizations from all over Croatia. Through specific collaborative formats in Clubture-HR program more than 100 different projects within which more than 1000 events were realized in more than 50 cities.

Structure

The network is based on the participatory and dynamic model, which is the basic merit that distinguishes Clubture from any other form of member-based network, or content providing/distributing agency, or grant-giving/funds re-distributing organization. Namely, the membership is built on an open model of participation and inclusion based on the program participation. Each organization that initiates and implements a program becomes a full network member, while each organization that hosts a program becomes an associate network member. Moreover, there is no central coordination that would organize cultural content distribution. The network functions on the basis of “peer-to-peer” principle, which means that organizations plan and implement program activities in direct collaboration with other organizations, whether they are or are not network members, while Clubture functions as a platform that encourages program sharing and project partnership. Furthermore, all actors that propose programs evaluate all programs at the same time through a specific, transparent and precise scoring and voting system. In this manner, the selection of program is made and as well as the decision on financing of particular programs from a mutual budget.

Aims

Clubture is a non-profit, participatory network of organizations, which aims to strengthen independent cultural sector through program networking, raising of public visibility, encouraging the organizational development of the sector, as well as strengthening it's influence on the changes of institutional framework within which it works.

Activities

CLUBTURE HR – Programme exchange

Program exchange is a key activity of the Clubture association. Program exchange is based on a direct collaboration of individual actors (organizations of civil society, non-formal initiatives and artistic organizations), which mutually share cultural contents and/or mutually create projects and programs. The key of the five-year success of this program is in its model, which ensures genuine collaboration of larger number of actors and diversity of contents. Individual programs are realized in diverse presentation forms (exhibitions, film programs, music performances, workshops, dance and theatre plays and other performing forms, lectures..). In a similar manner they cover diverse fields of activities (dance, performing arts, new media and technologies, visual culture, music, contemporary arts, theory, comics, urban culture, youth culture…).

CLUBTURE'S REGIONAL INITIATIVE

The Clubture network took the main role in the process of creating regional program sharing and a project collaboration network. The basic idea of the program is to establish a regional collaborative program platform within which independent cultural organizations will collaborate on joint programs.Pilot-phase together with the program activities started in March 2006. There were eight different collaboration projects that are implemented as partnership programs between organizations from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Macedonia and with events that were implemented in all these countries. If we consider the fact that in this area there are no other forms of organized long - term cultural cooperation, independent cultural scene has the opportunity to take the pioneer role in establishing a solid and sustainable model of cultural exchange in the region. Thus the finial goal of this program is the establishment of independent poly-centric regional program cooperation network.

KULTURPUNKT.HR

In 2005 the portal Kulturpunk.hr started aiming to promote and to present primary the independent cultural scene, and than civil initiatives connected to the independent cultural scene that managed the process of public advocacy directed towards wider social issues. Apart from these aims, Kulturpunk.hr develops instruments for analytical and critical approach to the topics in the area of culture in general, and completely avoids tendency toward the culture of sensationalism. Thus, excellence and the quality of writing as well as covering of a topic using the guidelines for editorial policies of the portal Kulturpunk.hr. With the intention to create the playground for the improvement of expert and journalists’ writing, the portal opened its space to the young and non-established authors thus creating its own network of permanent associates.

KULTURA AKTIVA

KULTURA AKTIVA program consists of different advocacy and monitoring public policies activities, aiming to improve institutional framework that is relevant for civil cultural sector, but also the cultural sector in general. Program also deals with issues in youth policies - those issues that are related and that are interfering with specifics of organizations that are participating in the network, such as youth clubs, organizations that are active in youth culture, or those that deal with organizing youth free time, etc.

The most of the activities are aimed towards the formation of transparent cultural policies models in local (regional and cities) administrations. In 9 cities and 4 counties, local coalitions of organizations continuously implemented diverse advocacy activities. Programs also have an educational segment, where, through workshops and trainings as well as the exchange of experience, organizations acquire relevant knowledge and skills in the field of policy processes, most notably in the field of advocacy actions.
