IGBK – the International Association of Art in Germany Print


Introduction`


The International Association of Art in Germany (IGBK) considers itself as a lobby organisation working on national and international level to improve the status of the artist in legal, social and political terms. It seeks the dialogue with representatives of government and other political institutions in Germany and the European Union.

IGBK is the German committee of IAA/AIAP (International Association of Art / Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques), which with over 70 member organisations is the largest international, non-governmental association of visual artists. The IAA/AIAP has consultative status at UNESCO. It supports the international exchange of artists and the improvement of their working conditions world-wide. In 2002 the two IAA regions Eastern and Western Europe were merged into one and a foundation for efficient lobbying on European level has therefore been laid.

Through its co-operation with ECA (European Council of Artists) and Culture Action Europe, the European Forum for the Arts and Heritage, IGBK aims to make the artists’ interests heard by the European political institutions and their representatives.

Structure


IGBK is the umbrella organisation of the three most important national artists’ organisations:
  • Bundesverband Bildender Künstler (Federal Association of Artists)
  • Deutscher Künstlerbund (German Artists Association)
  • GEDOK, Verband der Gemeinschaften der Künstlerinnen und Kunstförderer (Federation of Women Artists and Patrons of the Arts).
IGBK therefore represents about 17.000 visual artists in Germany.

Activities


IGBK initiates and organises symposia and workshops on topics relevant to artists, e.g. ´Mapping Blind Spaces – The future of arts and education` (2003 in Karlsruhe). The projects are documented in publications, catalogues and on-line under www.igbk.de

The service offered by IGBK includes providing information on working opportunities and support schemes for artists in Germany and abroad. With its on-line database and a list of grants, competitions and awards which are both constantly being updated and available on-line. IGBK aims to ease the access to the maze of international opportunities for artists. IGBK also gives advice on formalities in relation to international exhibition or exchange projects and issues the identity card for professional artists living in Germany which grants concessions or free entry to many museums world-wide. The service and information is open to all artists whether they are a member of an artists’ organisation or not.
