Introduction
The Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft is an association of private individuals, organisations and institutions working in the field of cultural policy at the level of the municipalities, the Federal States and the Federal Government. Founded in 1976 with the goal of enriching the cultural policy debate by giving impulses for political reforms, the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft aims to open public cultural institutions to a broader public in order to expand cultural participation in society and increase interest in the arts and culture.
Structure
The Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft is a non-profit association. The Managing Board consists of 17 members and is elected by the General Meeting for a term of three years. The Executive Board, comprising the President, two Vice-Presidents and the Treasurer, is in charge of the operative business of the association. As regards content, the work of the association is handled by three departments: 1. the Association Office, 2. the Institute for Cultural Policy, 3. the Cultural Contact Point. The Institute for Cultural Policy and the Cultural Contact Point have their own boards of trustees/advisory boards, which advise and monitor the work of the departments in terms of content. The Managing Director of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft is assigned responsibility for the current affairs of the association by the Managing Board. Number of members: 1,400.
Aims
The aims of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft are defined in a policy statement, which was updated in 1998. The Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft advocates a publicly accounted cultural policy that is actively shaped at all institutional levels and guarantees cultural diversity and artistic freedom as the basis of a democratic, multi-cultural society, providing access to the arts and culture for as many people as possible. The Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft sees itself as a moderator and a provider of impulses in the concert of cultural players, and wants to be actively involved in the development of the cultural infrastructure by contributing conceptual ideas and structural proposals.
