SYNDEAC – National Syndicate of Artistic and Cultural Companies Print

Introduction


In 1971, around forty directors, gathered by Georges Goubert, Jean Danet and Robert Gilbert, decided that the time had come to convey the real presence of the public sector in the field of theatre and related professions through an organisation responsible for defending its interests. And so SYNDEAC was established.

Structure


The members of SYNDEAC are artistic and cultural enterprises whose principal activity is the creation, production or presentation of live performance, subsidised by the state – at national or regional level – or by local authorities. Their directors have chosen to take the responsibility to initiate, pursue, reformulate or reinvent public live performance, and to link together the notion of the theatre to that of public service.

Activities


As an interlocutor with public administrations, SYNDEAC is a lobbying organisation in the definition of cultural policies. Offspring of the movement towards theatrical decentralisation in France, it encourages plans and reforms for an ambitious artistic cultural policy.

It is thus that it aims to examine and debate the political bases of the artistic policies of its members. It guarantees the maintenance of networks of theatre, music and dance organisations and companies, which today express the diversity, richness and multiplicity of the public sector. These requirements concern the whole range of sectors activity, from training to artistic creation.

A cohesive factor in the profession, refusing individualistic approaches, SYNDEAC is the forum for debate to serve as the reference point for publicly-spirited theatre. It actively participates in defining the deontology of the live performance professions in France (cultural policy and social policy). It has the will to mobilise the relevant professionals in collective actions to counteract any serious attack on the public sector.
