Introduction


Visual Artists Ireland is an all Ireland membership body for professional visual artists. It provides services, facilities and resources for artists, acts as an advocate for artists and initiates artistic projects and publications.

The organisation was established in 1980 under the name the Sculptors’ Society of Ireland and adopted the name Visual Artists Ireland in 2005.


Structure


Visual Artists Ireland is a membership organisation for individual artists. Full Professional Members of the organisation must meet a set criteria which defines a professional artist. Artists who do not meet the professional criteria can join as Associate Members.

The members elect a Board of 8 artist Directors. The artist directors can co-opt up to 5 non-members with specialist business/professional skills.

The Board of Directors employ an Executive Director and staff to administer and run all aspects of the organisation.

Aims

Activities


Visual Artists Ireland provides a range of services, facilities and resources including:
  • The Visual Artists News Sheet - A 32 page bi monthly magazine
  • Email Bulletin – a twice weekly email of news information and opportunities
  • Info-pool – a comprehensive on line information resource
  • Training – professional development workshops
  • In house facilities – digital video and editing equipment
Visual Artists Ireland engages in artistic programmes including:
  • Printed Project – a bi-annual journal of contemporary art
  • Media residencies
  • Collaborative symposia, exhibitions and events
Visual Artists Ireland engages in advocacy lobbying and representation on issues affecting individual artists including:
  • Arts policy and strategy of central and local government
  • Copyright issues
  • The social and economic status of artists
