Centro Nacional de Cultura Print

Introduction

The Centro Nacional de Cultura (CNC) was founded in 1945, during the Salazar era, as a space for meetings and dialogue between the different political and ideological sectors of society, in defence of a free and multi-disciplinary culture.

Since 25 April 1974, the CNC has worked to transmit a notion of culture without boundaries, be they disciplinary or geographical. It tries to be the bridge which brings together those whose paths would not necessarily cross: old and young, artists and businessmen, public and private sectors.

Structure

The CNC is a private association classified as being "of public interest".

Aims

A large part of its activity is dedicated to the defence of Portugal’s cultural heritage, the disclosure of the role Portugal’s culture plays in the world, the strengthening of links between members of the Portuguese-speaking community, and the stimulation of a permanent dialogue amongst artists and cultural agents within Europe.

Activities

CNC pursues these objectives through publications, multimedia publications, exhibitions, courses, seminars and study trips.
  • It also promotes artistic and literary prizes and endows young artists with grants.
  • It has created a multimedia databank of the heritage, which is designed to link up to other relevant databanks.
  • It organises training in heritage, cultural tourism and new technologies applied to culture.
  • It renders cultural services to associations, companies and local authorities. An example is the CIBERCHIADO – ENTERTAINMENT. This has been renovated with more stations, new services, cyberculture competitions and games. It features live entertainment with prizes and isonnected to Café No Chiado for a drinks service
The CNC can host foreign groups for cultural tours in Portugal, organises "Lisbon Walks" in different languages, welcomes foreign artists at the Artist's Residence and launched the “Young Citizen on Wheels” for individual schoolchildren between 5 and 10 years old where games, outings and artistic entertainment are organised in order to awaken their spirit of citizenship, with an emphasis on civic, urban and environmental causes.

On the EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS the CNC hosts the liaison Office of the EHD, a common initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

The Portuguese branch of the Yehudi Menuhin International Foundation (Menuhin Portugal) has its office at the CNC, where the network MUS-E and other projects are developed.
