![]() IntroductionThe House of World Cultures is a leading centre for non-European contemporary arts and a venue for projects exploding artistic boundaries. StructureThe House of World Cultures is a division of Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH, a non-profit organisation which also includes The Berliner Festspiele and the Berlin International Film Festival. It is financed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. The House of World Cultures is also promoted by the Federal Foreign Office. AimsMigration, globalisation, encounters with different traditions and different modernities have changed societies and cultures throughout the world and created new conditions for artistic production. Conceptual models based on the division of the world into a centre and a periphery are giving way to a new paradigm that recognises diverse cultures of equal value. All over the world, the works of artists, authors and scientists are responding to these changes in their works. Co-operating with artists and specialists working in these fields, the House of World Cultures seeks to develop a programme which presents responses and artistic models that reflect these international conditions, examining what they mean for the individual as well as for people living together in a global world. ActivitiesThe House of World Cultures has set itself the task of presenting non-European cultures through their fine arts, dance, theatre, music, literature, film and the media and engaging them in a public discourse with European cultures. The programme of the House of World Cultures focuses on the contemporary arts, on current developments in the cultures of Africa, Asia and Latin America, and on the artistic and cultural consequences of globalisation. It attaches priority to projects exploring the potential of both intercultural co-operation and its presentation. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme work and the endeavours to transcend divisions between diverse specialisms make the House of World Cultures a unique venue. Exhibitions, readings, discussions, films, conferences, music, theatre and performances open new horizons.
