Introduction
The International Cultural Centre in Krakow is a research, expert institution which is active in the areas of art exhibitions, promotion and publishing. In its many fields of interest it integrates art, history, culture and philosophical thought into the realities of politics and free market economy. It successfully blends modernity with tradition, as illustrated by the Centre’s seat, the Ravens House, with its historical interiors fitted with state-of-the-art technical equipment. Here, the wide public meets scholars, artists and politicians, young people hold debates with distinguished intellectuals, and everyone can explore old and modern art.
Structure
The ICC is a national cultural institution funded and organized by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, with around 45 employees. ICC Programme Council, comprising of prominent Polish experts in the field of culture and heritage, creates a general policy of the Centre.
The ICC is divided into four units:
- The Centre for Exhibitions and Publications
- The Research Institute of European Heritage
- The College for New Europe
- The Strategy and Communication Department
Aims
The Centre launched its activities on 29th May 1991 during the CSCE symposium in Krakow. It was a special moment: the first big meeting of East and West dedicated to culture and cultural heritage since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. This way the newly set-up institution with a clear mission made its presence felt on the international forum from its inception. The core idea of the Centre is inter-cultural communication and creating a common Europe that bridges political, ideological and religious divisions and underscores the significance of Central Europe for European and global heritage.
As a member of cultural networks and an active participant in international organisations, the Centre has had a significant role in defining new directions for Polish cultural policy. It provides forum for cultural heritage professionals, and hosts representatives of culture, politics, economy and media from foreign countries. Lectures, seminars and conferences dedicated to the problems of European culture and cultural resources management are an element of the Centre’s educational mission set down in its statute. The ICC seeks to educate through discussion and direct contact with artists and organisers of cultural events. This principle is the underlying concept of the ICC’s summer school and the post-graduate study programme of the Academy of Heritage.
Through our multilingual publications such as books, conference proceedings or albums, we aim to reach the public not only in Poland but also abroad. The ICC Library offers readers access to thousands of specialist publications on culture. To trigger off discussions on the place of tradition in the contemporary world, the ICC Gallery stages exhibitions of painting, printmaking, sculpture, photograph and architectural achievements that range in date from the Renaissance to modern times.
To open new perspectives, to present opportunities for development, to adapt to the emerging needs, expectations and requirements relating to cultural heritage – these are the objectives of the International Cultural Centre at the outset of the 21st century, accomplishable through studying, educating, informing, presenting and promoting.
