LAF - Litterature Across Frontiers Print

Introduction

Literature Across Frontiers (LAF) is a programme of literary activities, exchange and policy debate operating in partnership with national and international organisations from Europe and overseas.

Literature Across Frontiers is based at the Mercator Centre, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, a European research, information and documentation centre, which runs projects and provides information and expert advice in the fields of European regional and minority languages and the media, language and the Internet, and translation and publishing of literatures written in less diffused European languages and related policies and funding. The centre is part of the Mercator Network.

Structure

Literature Across Frontiers works on projects with a variety of partners and is the convenor of the informal European Network of Literature Centres founded in Frankfurt in 2001. Main partners form the steering committee of the programme. (See list of partners on our website).

Aims

LAF aims to advance international exchange in the field of literature and to enhance the work of organisations engaged in the international promotion of literature and support for literary translation, and particularly to:
  • promote literatures written in the less diffused and minority languages of Europe;
  • encourage greater diversity in the publishing of literature in translation and in the programming of international literary events;
  • monitor policy, funding and professional practice in this area and stimulate relevant debate;
  • develop innovative approaches to the promotion of literature, support for translation and skills development of translators working in less-diffused languages;
  • create opportunities for collaboration and sharing of experience and resources among organisations operating in this field.

Activities

  • research, documentation and provision of information;
  • organisation of debates, seminars, conferences, international literary events, translation and writing workshops;
  • participation in book fairs with collective displays, stands and presentations;
  • European Network of Literature Centres;
  • Mosaic Publishers Network;
  • Transcript, tri-lingual online review of books and writing.
