Introduction

Trans Europe Halles is a European network of independent cultural centres. It was founded in 1983 and the network currently has 52 members and 19 friends organisations in 29 countries.

Trans Europe Halles provides a stimulating platform for exchange, support and co-operation between its members. The network brings together a great diversity of independent, multi-functional and multi-disciplinary cultural centres all across Europe.
The projects undertaken in the Trans Europe Halles network centres grow from civil needs and address social and artistic issues. They aim to promote co-operation and understanding between European cultural organisations.

Trans Europe Halles advocates the idea of culture in its broadest sense and encourages collaboration between different artistic disciplines. The network’s centres challenge the common cultural policy and support new talent, innovation, artists and cultural exchange, providing opportunities for young people to utilise and develop their artistic skills.

Structure

Trans Europe Halles is a registered network with a legal structure of a non-profit association. It currently has 52 members and 19 friends organisations in 29 European countries.
Trans Europe Halles is run in a decentralised way. The member centres participate in decision-making in the network meetings. Each centre appoints a delegate who has a right to vote and every member has one vote regardless of its size or economic status.

Trans Europe Halles board is the controlling and policy-making body of the network. It articulates and monitors the profile of network. Board members are elected annually in the spring meetings.

Trans Europe Halles communication and administration office is responsible for the network’s internal and external communication. It also organises the network’s archives and documentation and supervises the member centres’ responsibilities. The office is located at Mejeriet, Sweden.

Aims

Trans Europe Halles supports the idea of culture in its broadest sense and encourages collaboration between different artistic disciplines. The network aims to support alternative modes of artistic expression and provide a stage for artistic work that cannot be experienced elsewhere.

Activities

Trans Europe Halles provides a platform for exchange, support and co-operation between independent, multi-functional and multi-disciplinary cultural centres all across Europe.

The projects undertaken in the Trans Europe Halles network centres grow from civil needs and address social and artistic issues. They are conducted within the local context but provide an international perspective. The Trans Europe Halles projects aim to promote co-operation and understanding between cultural organisations across Europe.

The principal focus of Trans Europe Halles is the two annual network meetings. Time, energy and resources are invested in the assemblies to make them dynamic, informative and relevant to the members’ needs. Each meeting has a theme of interest to the network’s members and the autumn meeting is combined with a specialist seminar or conference. Trans Europe Halles meetings are hosted by member centres in rotation.
