Introduction


IETM is a membership organisation, which exists to stimulate the quality, development and contexts of contemporary performing arts in a global environment, by initiating and facilitating professional networking and communication, the dynamic exchange of information, know-how transfer and presentations of examples of good practice.

Structure


Created in 1981 and based in Brussels, IETM set up a small professional secretariat in 1989 and registered its statute as an international non-profit association constituted under Belgian law.

Funded by national bodies such as the Flemish Community of Belgium and the Dutch Cultural Ministry, as well as the European Commission and the European Parliament, it receives project support from time to time from foundations such as the European Cultural Foundation and from other national Ministries. IETM’s core income, however, comes is members' subscription fees.

IETM affairs are supervised by an international 23-member Board of Directors, including a 6-member Daily Board. Board members are unpaid and provide their own expenses connected to IETM duties.

IETM employs 4 staff members in its Brussels office and welcomes stagiaires.

IETM consists of over 400 subscribing professional performing arts organisations from 45 different countries, including festivals, arts centres, independent producers, theatre and dance companies, multi-media, new technology, documentation centres and public authorities. IETM members are engaged in innovative, contemporary performance work, and are committed to cross-border artistic exchange and collaboration.

Activities


IETM members and Board agreed a ‘restrucutre’ in April 2002, and now consists of three “units”: the Network, the Projects Unit and the Unit for Communication, Information Services and Training.

The IETM network organises two important ‘meetings’ per year, with 350 - 450 participants, 4 busy days (20 working sessions) of discussion, debate, project presentations and programme planning, as well as a full performance platform of innovative work from the ‘host’ country.

IETM projects derive from our new mission “to stimulate” and to provide opportunities for global networking in our sector. Current IETM projects provide bridges between Europe and : Palestine, Africa, Latin America, to and within the Balkans, Central Asia. IETM projects also include smaller “satellite” meetings focusing on one main topic (Contemporary Dance in Africa, for example).

IETM Communication, Information and Training highlights IETM’s specificity as an international, multilateral platform for independent performing arts professionals whose roots are national but whose visions and activities are much wider. IETM is leading an on-going a web portal development (www.on-the-move.org) giving links to primary sources of information and funding for the professional mobility of artists and arts operators.

We are also looking into the possibility of an international mentoring scheme which would link more- and less- experienced individuals and organisations for training and professional support.

IETM’s website www.ietm.org is open to members and the public and includes useful information regarding events, dance platforms, opportunities workshops, conferences, jobs, etc.

IETM's general publication programme includes case studies and policy documents of interest and value for the professional community and policy makers alike.
IETM advises widely, in government or inter-governmental circles and is constantly represented at international conferences or seminars, especially those devoted to cultural networks and their developments.
