 IntroductionThe European Choral Association - Europa Cantat is the result of a merger between Europa Cantat - European Federation of Young Choirs (EFYC), founded in 1960/1963 and the Arbeitsgemeinschat Europäischer Chorverbände (AGEC), founded in 1955. The merger was completed in January 2011. VisionThe vision of the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat is to be the leading pan-European non-profit organisation dedicated to education and cultural exchange among singers of all ages, especially among children and young people in the field of vocal music. The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat directly represents more than one million and reaches out to more than 20 million singers, conductors and composers in over 40 European countries including new and future members of the European Union. MissionThe European Choral Association - Europa Cantat exists to encourage and increase greater understanding and cooperation between Europeans and world citizens by bringing them together in the common activity of singing, promoting the exchange and development of cultural heritage and education. - It is our differences that unite, not divide us. The seat of the organisation is in Bonn, Germany. The current president is Sante Fornasier (Italy) who is assisted in his work by 14 Board members from 13 European countries, by Secretary General Sonja Greiner and the staff in Bonn. Structure 50 national and regional choir organisations in 28 European countries. Several hundreds choirs and individual members in over 40 European countries (over 50 countries worldwide) AimsIn general the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat aims at: - improving the quality of vocal music all over Europe - supporting singing at all age levels, especially the singing of children and young people - advocating for music education for all children in kindergartens and elementary schools and the importance of singing within music education - encouraging life-long learning and the dialogue between the generations, offering opportunities to singers of all ages - being the reference organisation for singing at all age levels, especially singing among children and young people and offering services to the choral world - supporting cultural diversity and promoting cultural exchange within Europe - encouraging the mobility of conductors, composers and singers - encouraging the creation of innovative contemporary vocal music - serving choral life in Europe - encouraging the exchange of artistic and organisational knowledge and experience between choir organisations in Europe - supporting the promotion of tolerance and inclusion through choral singing - making its activities accessible to (young) people from all European countries including those who are geographically, economically, socially or otherwise disadvantaged : on the basis of respect for differing cultures and a strong belief in the social and economic importance of vocal music with a special focus on children and young people under 27 It is a basic right for all people to express themselves and communicate through music. The European Choral Association – Europa Cantat therefore endorses the five basis music- rights, formulated by the European/International Music Council: - The right for all children and adults to express themselves musically in all freedom. - The right for all children and adults to learn musical language and skills.
- The right for all children and adults to have access to musical involvement through participation, listening, creation and information.
- The right for musical artists to develop their artistry and communicate through all media, with proper facilities.- The right for musical artists to obtain just recognition and remuneration for their work. ActivitiesEuropa Cantat reaches these aims by: - offering international festivals and singing weeks at which up to 3,500 singers and conductors from 10 to 50 European countries meet, share their daily life, listen to each other and make music together - organising training courses for conductors, composers, singers and managers with participants from 10 to 20 European countries and a high multiplying effect - using its network for direct bilateral and multilateral contacts between choral organisations, choirs, singers, conductors, composers and choral managers in Europe.
