AEC – The European Association of Conservatoires Print


Introduction


The AEC is a European cultural and educational network, which was established in 1953. It represents the interests of those institutions, which are concerned with training for the music profession.

Structure


The members of the AEC are represented by the AEC Council, which consists of representatives from twelve member institutions. AEC members elect these representatives for 3-year terms of office during the Association's annual General Assembly. The decisions of the Council and the General Assembly are implemented by the AEC Office, which is based in Utrecht (the Netherlands) and currently consists of three persons: the AEC Chief Executive, the AEC Office Manager and the Project Administrator. The AEC Office is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the AEC policy and the practical organisation of AEC activities.

Today the AEC includes representatives from 191 institutions in 46 countries. 70% of the active members are located in the European Union, while 23 associate members are based in 12 countries in North America, Asia and Australia.

Aims


The Association wants to reach its aims by:
  • Stimulating and supporting international collaboration between member institutions;
  • Realising various international projects about relevant subjects in professional music training;
  • Organising an Annual Congress and various specific seminars for its members;
  • Representing the interests of the professional music training sector at national, European and international level.
The general aims of the AEC are outlined in the AEC Credo, which was endorsed by the AEC members during the AEC General Assembly in Vicenza in November 2000.

Activities


1. Annual meetings and seminars
The AEC organises an annual Congress, held in a different country in November each year. Above and beyond the formalities required by the association's by-laws, the Congress allows for the discussion of specific themes, the exchange of an important amount of information and the elaboration of multiple partnerships (exchanges within the framework of networks, co-productions of concerts and a variety of events, etc.). In addition, the Congress provides its members with an opportunity for informal and convivial encounters.

AEC is also involved with the organisation of the annual meeting for international relations co-ordinators in the field of professional music training. During this meeting, held in a different country in September each year, officials from European conservatoires responsible for international contacts and the participation in European exchange programmes meet to exchange information and discuss future initiatives. In addition to these annual meetings, the AEC is responsible for the realisation of various other meetings, such as the meetings of the AEC Mediterranean working group and other regional meetings.

2. Research and development projects
As part of its policy to foster research and observation in the area of higher education in music, the AEC has set up research and development projects with the specific aim of providing insights into various subjects in the field of professional music training in Europe.

3. Publications
The AEC intends to develop an active research and publication arm in the broadest sense: from traditionally printed documents to computer-generated and audio-visual ones, from information to publication of research studies. In addition, the AEC regularly publishes an AEC Newsletter, distributed by email, and a Magazine for the benefit of its members as well as, on an annual basis, the Congress proceedings.

4. Representation and advocacy
The AEC intends to reinforce its relations with European institutions and to take on a greater role providing expertise in the European musical arena.
