EFA – European Festivals Association Print


Introduction


The EFA is a member organisation of festivals. The aim of this organisation is to promote the work of artistically high quality performing arts festivals across Europe. In this way, the European Festivals Association hopes to make your search for Festival information easier than ever before. The EFA represents an organisation of more than ninety high quality festivals in 31 European countries and 4 non-European countries.

Structure


The Association has a permanent secretariat in Gent (at the Castle of Borluut). Among other responsibilities, it disseminates information about member festivals and edits different publications on the Association. The General Assembly meets once a year. By changing the Statutes in 1997, EFA opened the way to developing into a representative umbrella organisation of European festivals. New categories of membership were introduced for 'collective' members. Eleven national associations joined EFA (representing over 500 festivals). Further applications are in preparation from recently created associations.

Aims


The aim of EFA is to promote the highest ideals and significance of festivals through common publicity and by any appropriate means to maintain and develop the high artistic quality of festivals and their important role in international cultural co-operation.

Activities


As an organisation of important festivals in Europe, the EFA seeks primarily to:
  • co-ordinate the efforts of its members
  • facilitate co-operation and coproduction
  • set common policy
  • struggle against uniformity by emphasising the diversity of festivals
  • pursue a cultural policy aimed at improving the state of art in society
  • facilitate any measure likely to keep or re-establish peace and understanding among peoples
Among others, the organisation established the Euro-Festival Info Centre site, which provides information about the member festivals (music-dance-theatre).

The site itself presents a wide range of links to the individual homepages of each festival and of each associated national festival associations (providing a second system of links to another 300 European Festivals!).

It provides information on European festival productions, events, and new discoveries in contemporary creation and in the contemporary performing arts.
