Come and take part in our Annual Conference, the meeting place of the European Arts sector, which will give you the keys to the main cultural debates in Europe today, and the tools to take action, all within the exceptional environment of La Friche La Belle de Mai!
Further information will be available soon. Registration will open in August. In the meantime, SAVE THE DATE IN YOUR DIARIES! The conference is aimed at all artist, creatives and cultural operators who want to develop further their knowledge and networks in the field of cooperation and European cultural policies. 150 – 200 participates are expected from all over Europe and the Mediterranean area.
The Annual Conference is a privileged moment during which Culture Action Europe gives its members (and the cultural sector in general) the tools and language to get involved more efficiently and effectively at the European level with the aim of influencing European policies in your favour.
The 2008 conference will open the debate on a number of contemporary European cultural issues, and ensure that cultural players in Europe (both local and European wide) are up to date with the stakes, the policies and the European calendar of action. Holding the conference in Marseilles is also an opportunity to widen our geographical base towards the south and start a dialogue with our Mediterranean partners.
In order to allow each of us (new attendees, managers or public representatives) to understand better what is at stake and take an active part in the debates, the conference is being designed in as open and accessible a way as possible, trying to avoid where possible European specialist jargon. Throughout, we will be aiming to give conference participants the tools necessary to both understand and to act.
This year the conference looks at two main themes:
1. The place of culture in the Union’s external relations (paying special attention to the Euro-Mediterranean region)
- What is really at stake in external European relations and how is the Union facing up to the challenge?
- What are the needs of operators on the ground and what should Europe be doing in this area?
- What is the role of local authorities in the implementation of Europe’s international and external cultural policies?
2. The role of civil society in developing Europe’s cultural policies
- How can we influence Europe’s cultural action? What are the interests that we need to defend or promote?
- How can we better structure and coordinate our voices?
In Marseilles we will explore the ever more important question of the role of culture in Europe’s external relations. We will try to understand better the political context for such work and how it impacts on our cultural players (some of whom are already developing cooperation projects beyond of Europe’s borders).
We will also discuss the key role of the regions in implementing European international cultural cooperation.
Finally, as one of the sectors’ main voices, we will finish the conference with a deep reflection on how we talk to the European institutions:
- What are our European interests?
- How should we structure our political message?
- What alliances do we need and what common interests do we defend?
This reflection will be fed by a practical consultation on a number of concrete subjects (production, education, dissemination etc.) and the results will be communicated thereafter to the European Institutions in the form of Culture Action Europe recommendations.
Culture Action Europe would like to thank most particularly its key partner in the development and organisation of the conference, Relais Culture Europe : they have offered us both enthusiastic and engaged support!
The conference is supported by the Région Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur, Marseille Provence 2013 (candidate for European Capital of Culture 2013) the l’Office National de Diffusion Artistique.
The conference would also not be possible without the collaboration and input of our local partners: la Friche La Belle de Mai and Lieux Publics.
